About Wallace Road Nursery School
Wallace Road Nursery School has been part of the Northampton community since 1942 - yet many families tell us they had no idea such a special place was tucked away right here in their neighbourhood. We’re one of only around 400 maintained nursery schools left in the UK, a rare and highly valued part of the early years landscape .
What makes us different is simple: we are a school, not a business - and children are at the heart of every decision we make.

At Wallace Road, we believe the nursery belongs to the children. Everything - from the layout of the rooms to the way adults interact - is designed to help children feel happy, confident, valued, engaged, and curious .
Children choose where to play, what to explore, and how to follow their interests. Our environment is open, accessible, and intentionally calm. Over the years we’ve reduced the number of resources available because we’ve seen that fewer, high quality, open ended materials lead to deeper focus, richer play, and more imaginative thinking .

Experienced Practitioners Who Know Every Child
As a maintained nursery school, we have a highly qualified team, including a headteacher who is an early years specialist. This means children benefit from expertise in child development, not just childcare. Our practitioners build warm, trusting relationships with every child, taking time to understand their interests, strengths, and worries.

Because we are a school specialising in the 3–5 age range, we can focus entirely on play‑based, age‑appropriate education. This is very different from the approaches used in later primary years, and it’s why maintained nursery schools consistently achieve a far higher proportion of Outstanding Ofsted judgements than other early‑years settings .
